Courting disaster in state funding

The Jacksonville Daily News is quite right to point out that state government has its priorities all out of whack:

During the budget process in the General Assembly this year, Gov. Bev Perdue let it be known that her top priority was protecting the classroom. She balked at the prospects of increases in class sizes as a means of making ends meet. We didn’t see that same enthusiasm when it comes to protecting the courtroom.

The No. 1 priority of any general government is the protection of its citizens. Indeed, as our Founding Fathers wrote in the Declaration of Independence, governments are instituted to protect our unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Our court system is integral to that process. It needs to be given the means of bringing cases to trial and dispensing justice.

Instead, the governor and General Assembly raised taxes and retained wasteful spending in the new state budget — money that could have been used to fund the courts. JLF’s Terry Stoops discusses questionable education spending in this clip from CarolinaJournal.tv:
