Lewis speaks at UNCW

Kenneth Lewis, a Chapel Hill attorney and former Democratic campaign aide, spoke yesterday at UNC-Wilmington. If his message there was similar to his previous speeches around the state, Lewis sounded the usual notes. For example, in Salisbury:

Lewis called Washington “broken,” a system that runs on contributions from lobbyists and concerns itself too much with corporate profits. And he said Burr, a Republican, is not the lawmaker to help repair it.

“I see a Washington right now that is based on political gain instead of based on real solutions,” he said. “Richard Burr has been in Washington for 16 years and has had plenty of opportunity to improve North Carolina.”

Lewis noted that Burr voted against the federal stimulus package.

“Google Sen. Burr’s name,” said Lewis. “You’re not going to find him leading the way out of the banking crisis. In the midst of the economic crisis, Sen. Burr has become the poster child of what’s wrong in Washington.”

Lewis also says Burr received $1.7 million from health insurance lobbyists.

“Sen. Burr’s voice is silent when it needs to be heard,” Lewis said. “He is more interested for standing up for the right wing than standing up for what is right.”

And in Roanoke Rapids:

Lewis asserts Burr has not participated in smart government. “He has supported all the disastrous policies that have led to this meltdown,” Lewis stated. The hopeful told the group the economic stimulus bill was designed to provide three things — a tax cut for people who needed some relief, extend benefits to those who had lost their jobs, and create jobs, all programs he supports.

“Senator Burr, along with every other Republican senator, voted against that bill,” Lewis said. “He put the needs of towing the Republican line ahead of the needs of the people of North Carolina. Our senator became a poster child for all that’s wrong with government in Washington.”

I can’t imagine why Senate campaign strategists in Washington keep shopping for another candidate to challenge Burr.
